EQN: Aussies miss out on showjumping medals
HONG KONG, Aug 21 AAP - Australia had a disappointing end to its Olympic equestrian
campaign in Hong Kong tonight when its three showjumpers were unable to win the nation's
first ever medal in the discipline.
Edwina Alexander, 34, was considered a strong medal chance going into the individal
showjumping finale at the Sha Tin Arena.
But she finished on eight penalty points after knocking down two rails.
Her teammate Matt Williams hit five rails, also putting himself out of medal contention.
Laurie Lever, who at 60 is at Australia's oldest competitor at the Beijing Games, earlier
failed to qualify for the final round of 22 riders.
Australia's sole medal in the equestrian competition in Hong Kong was the silver it
won in team eventing.
