Fed: Travel to Venezuela should be deferred: DFAT
CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - Australians should defer all travel to Venezuela, the Departmentof Foreign Affairs warned today in upgraded travel advice for the South American nation.
Australians already in Venezuela should consider leaving if they had concerns aboutsecurity, DFAT said.
Those who stay should not travel to Amazonas state or to any area within 75 kilometresalong the Venezuelan border with Colombia.
"The security situation in Caracas and other major cities continues to deteriorate,due to the ongoing national strike which is fuelling political tensions between the governmentand the opposition," DFAT said.
"Australians in Venezuela who have concerns about their welfare should consider leaving.
"Australians remaining in Venezuela despite this advice should avoid large public gatherings,maintain a high level of personal security awareness and keep themselves informed of developmentsthat may affect their safety."
